This kitchen must-have has been made from slate and hand carved by Rajathani artisans. Slate slabs are cut, shaped and grinded by hand to give the desired look. The products are then polished and finished with food safe lacquer. Stone carving is a popular craft in Rajasthan, thanks to easy availability of different kinds of hard rocks like granites, marbles, quartzite and slates. In fact, these stones have been used right from the medieval times to build beautiful forts, palaces, and temples. The process starts by cutting the stone to the required size. The desired design is then drawn on the stone. Carving is done by hand using basic instruments like saws, chisels, knives etc. The skilled artisans produce astonishing results with these seemingly simple tools. It is a lengthy process where small pieces of stone can be carved in days while bigger pieces can take up to weeks or months
